The Graduates is a hilarious award winning film by indie filmmaker Ryan Gielen. Ryan and I met at a film festival where his acclaimed short film Deleted Scenes showed during the same block as Rex Buster, a short film I had recently scored by Nic and Amaro Shake. By the way, if you haven't seen Deleted Scenes, you should check it out online. It is at times thoughtful, at times uncomfortable, at times inappropriate, and mostly just a riot. But anyway, back to The Graduates, Ryan had a vision for the music of the film being at the same time integral to the film and an entirely separate entity. Rather than use a composer, he sought out songs from some of his favorite indie bands, many from New York's East Village. There were, however, a few songs for which he and his brother Matt (producer on the film) were unable to aquire the rights. They were looking for sound-alike songs, and while I am uncomfortable with that term because I don't want to infringe upon another artist's creative vision, I do actually really enjoy using the themes from a film and the feel of another song to create my own entirely different individual vision which ultimately captures more of the essence of the mood. These three songs couldn't be more stylistically different, and they were all a joy to write and record. All three songs are available for purchase as part of The Graduates double-disc soundtrack. Here Kitty Kitty and Get Offa My Case are on CD 1 and A Vision of One is on CD 2. Don't waste any time - go now and pick up these songs and anything else you like from The Graduates store for 10% off using the coupon code "FREEMAN10" or if you prefer, buy the album on iTunes. You can buy just my songs if you like, but I highly recommend the entire collection - it rocks. While you're on their web site, you should poke around, see if the film is showing in your area any time soon, and sign up for email updates. Add them on myspace. Add them on facebook. Add them to your Xmas card list. Why are you still reading this??? Go! |
